Apple Foldable iPhone: Release Date, Price, Design and Why Apple Waited So Long

What do we actually know about Apple’s foldable iPhone?

First, an important distinction.

Apple has confirmed its September 9 event. Apple has not publicly announced a folding iPhone as of September 8.

Everything below comes from analysts, supply-chain reporting and leaks ahead of the event. Enough independent reports are pointing in roughly the same direction, though, that the basic shape of the phone is becoming clearer.

One of the biggest unanswered questions is price.

Recent estimates have placed the potential starting price around $2,099 to $2,299, while other reports have suggested Apple could go above $2,500 depending on storage and configuration.

The exact number matters less right now than the general direction. Unless the leaks are way off, this probably won’t be another $999 iPhone.

It could be the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever sold.

What will the foldable iPhone actually look like?

Don’t picture a modern version of the old Motorola Razr.

Reports point toward Apple choosing a book-style folding design. You’d have a smaller screen on the outside for normal phone use, then open the device horizontally to reveal a much larger screen inside.

The rumored 5.5-inch outer display would actually be fairly small by current smartphone standards. Open the phone and you’d get something closer to a small tablet, with reports putting the inner display around 7.8 inches.

That could make the phone more useful than the gimmicky idea of simply having an iPhone that bends.

You could answer a text or check something quickly without opening it. Then unfold it for maps, email, web browsing, video, editing photos, reading or using multiple apps at once.

The crease in the screen has received almost as much attention as the phone itself.

Some early reports made it sound like Apple had somehow figured out how to make the crease completely disappear. More recent reporting has been more careful. The better description seems to be minimal rather than invisible.

Apple has reportedly spent years working on the hinge, screen durability and the way the display sits when opened.

That’s easy to dismiss as a small engineering detail until you remember that a normal iPhone doesn’t have to survive being bent in half thousands of times.

Why did Apple wait so long to make a foldable phone?

This is where the foldable iPhone gets more interesting than another spec comparison.

Apple is late.

Very late.

Samsung released its first Galaxy Fold in 2019. If Apple’s first foldable arrives in 2026, the company will enter the category roughly seven years later.

Normally we’d describe a company that far behind as missing a trend.

But foldable phones still haven’t really become normal.

Counterpoint Research has estimated that foldables account for only a small percentage of the total smartphone market even after years of products from Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, Google and other companies.

That means Apple didn’t exactly sit on the sidelines while everyone else took over smartphones.

It let other companies spend years explaining the category.

They dealt with broken early screens, giant creases, awkward shapes, thick designs and skeptical customers. They taught consumers what a folding phone was and slowly made the idea seem less strange.

Apple now gets to arrive when people already understand the concept.

That’s a different type of being late.

Apple has followed this pattern before.

It wasn’t the first company to make an MP3 player. It wasn’t the first to make a smartphone. It didn’t invent smartwatches or wireless earbuds either.

Apple’s strength has often been waiting until an idea is understandable enough to package it for a much larger audience.

The foldable iPhone may be another test of that strategy.

The $2,000 price tells us who Apple thinks this phone is for

Nobody needs a $2,300 phone.

Apple knows that.

That’s why I don’t think the first foldable iPhone should really be viewed as the replacement for the normal iPhone.

It’s closer to a halo product.

It gives someone who already buys Apple’s most expensive phone somewhere else to go. It gives Apple something visually different to put in stores and advertisements. And it gives people who haven’t been excited about upgrading their phones in years something new to talk about.

Foldable phone pricing has already been moving toward the high end of the market. Counterpoint expects phones priced above $1,600 to make up a growing portion of foldable sales.

Apple entering the category could push that even further.

Counterpoint has also forecast that Apple could quickly take a meaningful share of global foldable sales, even if its first model arrives late in the year.

A few million units would be small compared with normal iPhone sales.

But a few million phones costing more than $2,000 each isn’t exactly a small experiment.

There is another effect that’s harder to put into a spreadsheet.

Once Apple makes a foldable, foldable phones may stop feeling like such an experimental corner of the smartphone market.

Should you wait for the foldable iPhone?

If you’re thinking about buying an expensive iPhone right now, I’d at least wait until Apple’s September 9 event before making the decision.

We’re too close not to.

The foldable could make sense for people who already use their phone for a lot of reading, video, email, travel, editing or work and like the idea of carrying something that can become a small tablet.

There are reasons to be cautious too.

The first-generation model will probably be extremely expensive. We won’t know much about long-term hinge durability until people have actually lived with the phone. The camera system may be less capable than Apple’s normal Pro phones in some ways. And if Apple really does use Touch ID rather than Face ID, buyers may have to accept a few strange compromises on the company’s most expensive phone.

Personally, I’m more interested in seeing someone open and close it than hearing another processor benchmark.

That’s the part Apple has to get right.

The bigger question is whether Apple can make folding feel normal

I don’t think Apple’s biggest accomplishment here would be creating a better hinge.

Samsung has been building foldable phones for years. Huawei is already selling devices that fold more than once. Apple isn’t walking into untouched territory.

The harder job is making someone who has never cared about foldable phones suddenly picture themselves owning one.

That’s where Apple tends to be dangerous.

A product category can exist for years without quite becoming normal. Then the right company gives it the right shape, software, price story and place inside an existing product lineup, and suddenly people understand what they’re supposed to do with it.

Foldable phones are still waiting for that moment.

Apple may create it.

Or Apple may discover that even its customers aren’t willing to spend more than $2,000 because an iPhone folds in half.

Either result would tell us something interesting about where smartphones are heading.

Because after years of watching everyone else experiment, Apple finally appears ready to find out.
